Chapter Twenty-Four

“Shit,” Nicholas cursed, backing away as the creature lifted its head. He barely had time to register the fact that it had no eyes before it lunged at him. He managed to get off a lone plasma bolt, the energy sizzling against its thick skin without apparent effect.

He brought the rifle butt up just in time to catch it in the creature’s long razor teeth. The monster bit down, ripping the weapon out of his hands and flinging it aside. It slashed its claws at his chest, digging into his armor’s overlay and throwing him down.

As he took a step toward Nicholas, plasma bolts slammed into the creature from behind. Shrieking in pain, it whirled on the other knights and went for Yasmin. Dag leaped on its back, stopping it in its tracks. as he tried to stab a wrist blade through its hide. It continued howling as the combined firepower of the Knights scorched its flesh. Failing to shake Dag from its back, it jumped sideways, twisting in the air and slamming back into a building wall in an effort to crush the little bot. He didn’t give, holding fast and repeatedly stabbing the creature.

The howls increased in volume when the plasma bolts finally breached its thick skin, reaching its vital innards. It turned and tried to scramble down the alley. Dag stabbed it one last time, the final blow fatal. It collapsed on the asphalt and didn’t move again.

“Nick, are you okay?” Yasmin rushed up to him, touching his chest everywhere, her fingers looking for bloody rents in his armor.

“I’m okay,” he assured her, taking hold of her hand and bringing it to his lips to kiss her fingers as he got back to his feet. He glanced over at his rifle. The entire energy breech mechanism was crushed, the weapon inoperable.

Scott came up behind them, lifting his chin to peer over Nicholas’ shoulder. “What the hell is that thing?”

Nicholas shook his head. He had never seen anything like it before. “Hayden?”

“Beats me,” Hayden replied. “ It was a tough son of a gun though. Took nearly twenty rounds to take it down.”

“Plus Dag,” Yasmin said.

“I’m more concerned with who this hombre is.” He leaned over the dead soldier. “That’s not Centurion armor. It looks custom.” Next, he pried the rifle from the dead man’s hand, giving it a quick look. “This is interesting.”

Nicholas turned his attention to the weapon. It was smaller than the plasma rifle he had lost. Lighter too, with a short barrel and a thick body. A long magazine hung from the firing mechanism in front of the trigger. “That doesn’t shoot plasma.”

“Nope,” Hayden agreed. He passed the weapon to Nicholas. “Since you lost yours.”

He accepted the gun, his head shifting in response to a noise in the distance. “All the racket we just made is bound to bring attention we don’t want. We need to keep moving.” He turned away from the alley, looking down the street just as a trife jumped up onto the roof of one of the cars.
